California Could Stop Paying for Serious Hospital Errors

Californian's can expect to see changes in what Medicare will cover. In the latter part of 2008 Medicare will no longer pay for what they consider 'preventable errors' in hospitals.

Under bill AB2146, errors such as objects being left inside patients, and patients who receive the wrong blood type will no longer be covered. The idea is that these are preventable errors. Many hospitals argue that some conditions on the 'hit list' are not entirely preventable i.e., bed sores.

California is not alone with respect to non-coverage of preventable errors. According to the LA Times " Maine, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and New York have restricted payments for avoidable medical errors. And hospital associations in Minnesota, Washington and Vermont have pledged never to bill patients for the costs of correcting errors.

Medical Helicopter Accidents on the Rise

The National Transportation Safety Board has expressed concern about a rash of accidents involving medical aircraft. Last weekend two medical helicopters collided in Arizona , killing six people, and severely injuring a nurse.

While we have always dealt with the occasional accident involving medical aircraft, we are in the midst of what is being described as a disturbing trend. There have been an increasing number of these types of accidents since the 1990s, and alalert this year there have been nine accidents involving emergency medical aircraft, causing the death of 16 people.

Why the increase? Experts believe it's caused by a number of factors, including the closing of emergency rooms in rural areas, an aging population, and simply the increase in numbers of medical helicopters, which have nearly doubled in the last ten years.
